11 Cards
We now have eleven (11) Councillors back at Mid Coast Council. Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be elected on 12 January 2022 from amongst the 11 councillors, the term you will hear for this is, from the floor. There are no wards so I have listed successful candidates in alphabetical order.
Bell Kathryn Independent
Epov Peter Independent Quota
Fowler Troy Liberal Quota
Howard Peter Independent Quota (Epov team)
Miller Jeremy Independent
Pontin Claire Labor (Country) Quota
Sandiland Paul Independent
Smith Dheera Greens
Smith Katheryn
Tickle Alan Independent Quota
West David Liberal
These are the cards that democracy has given the people of the MidCoast, from a very large deck. I am an optimist and expect a vital, co-operative Council. Healthy, respectful debate is welcome. The fragmented and undermining between the Councillors and also the Councillors and the Administration needs to end. All of the Councillors will be reminded of their roles and responsibilities during the Councillor training time.
Mayor
The election of the Mayor for the next almost two (2) years is a key appointment. The Mayor has many functions as listed in the LG Act. I prefer a lay position and see the MidCoast Council Mayor as being;
A leader of our community,
A leader within the Council,
Will truly listen,
The major link between Council and the GM both ways.
The vital link from Council to the GM to ensure Council decisions are acted upon appropriately,
The Mayor must have the understanding and be attune to the community. During this term of Council they all need to set aside ego, point scoring and just learn to get along. This next term of Mayor needs a very particular knowledge and skill set. This is a big job and will require a full time commitment to change and reform at MCC. The Mayor must work within a group of 11 councillors and set the way that administration will provide information and support to the democratically elected community Council.
